Covenant

What is it, really, for which we hunger most?
How well do we understand our own need—
To get and to have and to hold onto
The many needless things we want?

We are hungry!
Take, eat.

How deep of a well, truly, will end the drought in our hearts?

We are thirsty!
Drink from this, all of you.
We are restless!
Come to me all you who are weary and heavy-laden.

What can we honestly say we are waiting for—
To make up our minds
And our hearts
To live?

Give us a sign!
None but that of Jonah.
Give us a king!
Above all worldly kingdoms.
Give us love!
No greater love has anyone than this.

Old wineskins and earth-bound treasure,
One needful thing and the better part.

Losing
And finding,
As we give ourselves to you,
That you have given yourself to us.

Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefeully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast love for David. ~Isaiah 55:2, 3
