Psalm 23 in the Rearview Mirror

1 I am my own shepherd. In other words, I’m a stray. 2 This withered plain is my pasture, where even tears are claimed by drought. 3 My soul is bruised; a wound that won't heal, leaving me all the emptiness I find on this crooked path for no good reason at all.

4 Even though I currently reside in the valley of the shadow of death, I’m afraid of my neighbors because they know I live alone. The rod is broken and my staff leaves me comfortless.

5 So I prepare a table and invite all my enemies; hoping they have previous engagements. I bury my head in my hands as a broken cup falls in pieces to the ground. 6 Surely fearfulness and judgment shall pursue me all the days of my life, and I may never find my way home again.

“Yeah, I know what love is and, it just don’t stop.
But, I can explain it better when I say what love’s not.” ~Mars Ill

Sacred Heartland Sojourn

All is so ordinary...
Only crow sees how ordered it has become.
Sectioned off in one mile squares;
A patchwork quilt of brown and gold and green;
Transected by an unyielding grey racing stripe,
Crawling with locusts chirping and slurping this way and that.

Undulating fields wash over indiscriminate glacial debris
And seep into a calm endless glistening sea of gold
With only the slightest hint of ripples across its crown.
Occasionally smattered with outcroppings;
Windbreaks harboring rugged ancient compromised barns,
Proud square houses relegated to sheltering sparrows.

Sequestered by clover leafs from marauding infidels,
Each small town and village
Announces its sacramental place in time and space
From even great distances:
Galvanized ten story patens engorged with the bread of life;
A towering font primed for triune blessings.

The light of day breaks and retreats
Framed in rear view mirrors,
Only sister moon endures.
A ramp to exit - and one to return...

Both joy and sorrow flourish;
Where sacred worlds merge.
