What's in a Name?

What if “Christian” were less of a brand,
And more of an accusation or indictment?

What if “Christian” weren’t just how we see ourselves,
Or speak to one another about each other;
But, the How we live and the Who we love,
And the Way we give ourselves
For others?

What if it’s not what we call ourselves
(Or, everyone else) that matters?

What if it’s the One on whom we call?
The One who calls us? To be holy.
To be loving and to forgive. Who names us:
Beloved, Light and Salt.

Maybe we shouldn’t presume the privilege
Of naming good intentions and firmly-held beliefs
That have yet to take hold of another’s burden?

When we are most aptly named
Most intimately known
As “Christians”
By our love.

~John 13:35
